Community & Sound: An Evening of Diverse Music

Community & Sound: An Evening of Diverse Music
with Michael Chinworth and The Rudder Band / Darling Din / Tim Haufe with Strings
Mon. Oct. 23rd @ Pine Box Rock Shop
21+ / FREE / 9PM-12AM

Dear New York Community,

We warmly invite you to Community & Sound: An Evening of Diverse Music, with Michael Chinworth and The Rudder Band, Darling Din, & Tim Haufe with Strings.

As we've built Subtle Soup Records over the last few years, by far the most wonderful nights of music we host are these showcase gatherings where we are able to curate the whole night.

The feedback we receive most often is "I love the sense of community here, and all these people listening together."

That's why we're so excited to invite you to Pine Box Rock Shop to join us for another night of fantastic artists. It's a small intimate place, perfect for meeting people with a passion for music and hearing and seeing great artists up close.

This month we have soul art-pop singer and pianist Michael Chinworth and The Rudder Band. Michael's work has been described as "Beautiful music: soulful, affectingly poignant, lonely, truthful." - Allen Shawn (Music Composition Faculty, Bennington College). Anawan's Trevor Wilson describes Michael this way: "The voice that Michael has worked to perfect over the years is, in a word, perfect...I can’t wait for the world to catch wind of it and embrace his gift."

Next we have Darling Din, poetic-rockers recently celebrated by NPR's Bob Boilen. "Of the bands that played our first Tiny Desk Contest event in NYC, Darling Din was the one that wowed me most, from the singing of Lisa Jaeggi to the power of the guitar, bass and drums." Fresh off the release of their new album Batty Fang, they were listed as one of the top-ten Tiny Desk Concert submissions. NPR's Marissa Lorusso says their song "Trash" "has an intense energy that crackles just under the surface; when the song's pulsing bass and steady drums come in, that energy breaks through, raw yet refined. By the song's end, Lisa Jaeggi's guitar is gnarled and distorted, Sharon Raizer holds down both the drums and keys and bassist Jonathon Wright is locked into a melodic groove. The result is mesmerizing."

Finally, we have jazz-inspired singer-songwriter
and showcase veteran Tim Haufe with Strings. Tim is celebrating the release of his newest work What Came Next: Tim Haufe with Strings. This most recent entry into his catalog is a lush reimagining of his work in combination with a full string quartet. Daniel Dissinger, of InStereoPress describes Tim this way: “Tim has all the qualities one looks for in a live performance: He is in tune with the elasticity of the crowd. I could feel myself being drawn closer and closer to the music as the song went on.”

Here are the show details:

Kelly Hoppenjans Northeast EP Release Show for "Dreaming is Easy" (w/Heather Sommerlad, Michael Chinworth, & Aviva Jaye)

For our first showcase in over a year, we are proud to host the Northeast EP release show for Kelly Hoppenjans' Dreaming is Easy. Along with Kelly's performance, we have assembled a great program of singer-songwriters to make the whole evening a celebration of sound.

Our friend Kelly Hoppenjans will be traveling from Nashville in support of Dreaming is Easy, which has been described as "a blend of old school inspirations and modern day motivations" that "delivers melodies and verses that bounce around the wolds of folk, pop, rock and more with a grace that is hypnotizing" (Wolf in a Suit).

Opening the program is Heather Sommerlad, playing songs from Hummingbirds and Hearthstones, her most recent release under the Subtle Soup Records banner. VAMP describes the album as "deeply personal"..."inviting the listener into her world—a rich melding of Latin-influenced nylon string guitar, ethereal vocals, and Romantic string quartets."

Also joining the bill is Michael Chinworth, playing selections from Rudder Songs alongside other works by fellow collaborators. Allen Shawn (Music Composition faculty at Bennington College) has said that Michael's work is "Beautiful music: soulful, affectingly poignant, lonely, truthful."

Closing the show is Brooklyn-based artist Aviva Jaye. Aviva is playing in support of her recent EP release Just the Beginning. Aviva, a veteran of Subtle Soup showcases, brings an uplifting and optimistic approach to both folk and soul music.

HMS & The Elsa Nilsson & Jon Cowherd Duo at Caffe Vivaldi Sat. Aug. 6th

Join singer-songwriter and composer HMS and the Elsa Nilsson & Jon Cowherd Duo at Caffe Vivaldi for a night of inspiring and innovative music.

HMS will be playing in support of her latest full length self-produced release Hummingbirds and Hearthstones, and she will be joined by an ensemble of excellent NYC based musicians: Tavo Carbone, Adele Mori, and Katrina Monta. Together they make a captivating chamber ensemble for a must-hear night of music. You can watch some footage of their last performance here.

Swedish-born flute player Elsa Nilsson’s music is profoundly playful and widely influenced. “The beauty of music is how it transcends cultural boundaries,” states Nilsson. She highlights this in her compositions by mixing cultural elements to create a sound that is distinctly her own. Nilsson has built a solid career and reputation upon her belief that all folk music (including jazz) has a common thread, and that by weaving those threads together, a deeper, more complete understanding among varying cultures can be reached.

Together, Nilsson and Kentucky-born, New Orleans-schooled, New York-based pianist Jon Cowherd weave a rich musical tapestry with inspiration from both of their diverse musical backgrounds.

Join composer J.J. Beck and guitarist Jacob Spector in the Carriage Barn at Historic Park-McCullough in Bennington, VT, where they will each be performing selections from their most recent repertoire. JJ Beck's latest piano work revolves around his admiration and study of Thelonious Monk, Jason Moran, Brad Mehldau, Jaki Byard, and Keith Jarret. He weaves those inspirations together with an interest in the process of healing - himself and others - by exploring fears and desires. J.J. Beck has been called an " intense, original up-and-coming pianist/composer" with "jazz roots, cinematic scope, classical chops, punk inspiration" (New York Music Daily).

Jacob Spector will be playing classical compositions for guitar, alongside works by exciting New Music composers and his own compositions.

He is also the lead engineer and one of the founders of Akin Studios in Hoosick Falls, NY, where he currently composes.

Tim Haufe grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY.  He began writing songs at age 11.  By the time he was a young man, he had already written a significant catalogue of original music.  Influenced greatly by the neo-folk music prevalent in the Hudson Valley region where he grew up, Tim began playing around the area as a solo acoustic act, while maintaining a multi-instrumentalist role for his recording projects. His latest release, A Whim and Some Faith, was out 8/9/14 and has received critical acclaim. In 2011, Haufe graduated from Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont, where he received his bachelor's degree in Music Performance.  He currently lives in New York City, where he teaches and performs, striving to establish for his music the grand reputation that it deserves.

Aviva Jaye is a musician, performing artist and composer who loves connecting with people at the intersection of heart, brain and art. A vocalist and multi-instrumentalist currently residing in Brooklyn, she is dedicated to empathy and diversity through music. From the studio to the stage, Aviva takes a homespun approach to her own compassionate expression, using minimal acoustic instruments and equipment to share raw material that still shimmers with a certain finesse. Her songwriting is a clear contribution to the refined sound that results, with simple yet haunting motifs and transparent lyrics. Fans of a trained professional who draws from the simplicity of Simon & Garfunkel, the depth of Feist, the clarity of Regina Spektor and the comfort of an old American musical theatre number will be pleased.

A self-identified black, bi, feminist girl, Aviva has enjoyed working and volunteering as a youth counselor and academic tutor, literacy advocate, GLBTQ and feminist activist and proactive citizen of the world. Equality of global proportions and dauntless loving and living is her passion, and she looks forward to connecting with others through artistic collaboration and storytelling, travel and social activism.

The Kentucky-born, New Orleans-schooled, New York-based pianist Jon Cowherd is best known for his long-running partnership with drummer/bandleader Brian Blade, with whom he co-founded the Brian Blade Fellowship, The Fellowship’s highly acclaimed albums showcase Cowherd's stellar keyboard work and singular compositional skills. When not recording and touring with the Fellowship, Cowherd has worked extensively with a broad array of musicians from the jazz, pop and rock worlds.

SSR Showcase Featuring droneclone, Matthew Gantt, & The Glass Trade

Join us on Saturday, Nov. 15th for our monthly artist showcase at Two Moon Cafe, where established and emerging musicians have a chance to play to an intimate crowd and take brave artistic risks.

This month we're featuring three electronic composers: droneclone, Matthew Gantt, and The Glass Trade.

The Glass Trade is a new project by Daniel Munkus, lead-singer and guitarist for label band Old Robes. His new project sounds like a mash-up of composer Steve Reich and post-rock virtuosos From Monument to Masses. His set is the perfect way to decompress in an instrumental bath.

Following The Glass Trade will be Matthew Gantt. Matthew is a mad scientist with sound. He uses everything he can get his hands on, and the result is a compelling and loveable mix of infectious rhythms and sophisticated sampling.

Headlining the show will be droneclone. droneclone is Subtle Soup's resident electronic guru.
Droneclone weaves micro-sampling, live instrumentation and computer processing to create dense ephemeral sonic textures. Droneclone stitches looping tapestries of sound, often meandering into dub and ambient electronica territory. His approach is without genre but rather an exploration of varying sonic palettes and landscapes.

U.S. PremiereSep 17 - 20 + 23 - 24, 2014

“It's like a bedtime story gone awry. The threat is our inability to make sense of a shifting universe, to really know another human being and keep love constant.” – The Guardian

BAC presents the U.S. Premiere of celebrated contemporary Russian playwright Ivan Viripaev's Illusions, translated and directed by American theater artist Cazimir Liske, a Moscow Art Theatre School graduate. Through intertwining stories of two married couples, Illusions playfully unravels paradoxes of passion and death, loyalty and betrayal, truth and fiction, in a darkly comedic examination of true love.
